What is The Pattern

For centuries patterns have been used by artisans and craftsmen as archetypes from which to create an accurate representation of an original piece. Patterns, however, have not been limited to the reproduction of an art piece or an object. They have also been used to enable us to emulate the character, attitude, and actions of a person who is considered worthy of imitation.

As people who have chosen to follow Jesus, we have been called to have the same character, attitude and actions of Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5). We were call so that we might be conformed to his likeness, archetype, or pattern. (Romans 8:29) By being conformed to this pattern we become mature, perfect, complete, not lacking anything (Colossians 1:28 & 29, James 1:2-4). It as we progress towards this end that we will discover what it is to live as we were intended to live. We live in freedom, peace, and joy. We will have life and we will have it to the full (John10:10).

The scriptures were given to us in order that we might discover God’s great love for us, his grace which was demonstrated to us though his Son and the pattern of life that would enable us to be conformed to the image of Christ. This is not something we can reproduce on our own, it is the work of the Spirit of God, but we are invited to join him in this work by submitting ourselves to the example, or pattern of life given to us in Jesus.

The church was given so that we might be able to learn to imitate this pattern in a community that would encourage and support our transformation into the image of the Son. “The Pattern” is an extension of this community. We hope it will act as a reminder of the pattern we are to imitate. We also pray it will be a place where you can share your experience of modeling your life after this pattern. May you find this to be a place that will help to sustain you in your journey of becoming like Jesus.

Over the next few weeks and months we will add pieces of the pattern we have been given in scripture to this page. We do not want to overwhelm you with a long list of what this life would look like. Rather, we desire that as each new piece is added that you will take the time to prayerful consider how your life measures up to the pattern we are given in scripture. We want you to have time to consider what God might want to do in each of these areas, and to prayerfully seek his empowerment to become the person he has called you to be. There may be times of rejoicing and well as times of sorrow. There may be times of thanksgiving as well as moments of confession. There may be times when you recognize how God has already conformed you to the image of His Son as well as times when you are made painfully aware of areas that he still needs to reshape. All of this is good. If what you see drives you to God with thanksgiving, great. If what is revealed drive you to Him in need, even better!

Please remember, the pattern isn’t the goal. It is what the pattern allows us to reproduce which is important. May you find this pattern helpful as you seek to reflect the Lord’s glory, and continue to be transformed into his likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. – Jude 24 & 25
